11:24a Last night and Tonight
Last night was Black Planet in Bedford with daevid. This is rapidly becoming one of my favourite nights. Its local, its cheap, its fully of friendly people and there is always something happening. The music is usually pretty good (save when Sabine goes off on a 2hr solid Depeche Mode set) and due to being a pub music venue you can usual chat, typically outside in the smoking area, but that's fun. Ended up at Equires again, which was was somewhat short, got there 1am-ish kicked 2am, was great music and a dance floor with enough space for a little Me !
Tonight I am in a quandary, daevid is Catelin sitting and dmh is in Glasgow visiting a friend, which leaves me without my normal partners in Crime. I don't mind going to places I'm liable to know people on my own, say the Adenoids gig on Thursday (which was great)....However the only semi-reasonable option I know of so far is Chaos Theory in Nottingham, which I've been to once and was a small but fun industrial/bleep club, but I'm unsure I'd know anyone there....I may be brave and go anyway, with the plan that there is Rock City somewhere there maybe worth checking out and have a wander.
However, I'd be eminently persuadable, if there is much else around. Have car, will travel and don't mind a lift for company !

9:41p
I recently purchased a tea set from a local online auction site and am very very happy :) Today we christened it with some single origin Dilmah and home made meringues.

I have found out that the set is pre-1933 as it is made by R&D under Balmoral which operated from around 1902 to 1933. the style suggests to me then that it is probably from the teens or early 20s. Oh yes, that is a coffee pot and I am on the look out for a tea pot, sugar bowl and cream/milk jug (not sure which of the latter I have). The set is probably one aimed at the middle classes as it is remarkably similar to description in How to Keep House on £200 a year for a suitible but pretty set for every day use. it is remarkable to me that it has then survived so long being a servicable set rather than the best china. it belonged to the grandmother of the husband of the woman I bought this from so I think i am about the third owner, which again is quite remarkable given their age. We also sampled some Christmas tea which was a little strong in these cups, the green hints from the single origin suited it much more.
When summer comes around again (for it is winter here in the southern hemisphre) there shall be an Edwradian style breakfast/luncheon that shall make use of this.

9:47a For wealthy Whitby-going types
Fab vintage shop The Stonehouse have added another property to their list of luxury accommodation. It's a Grade II listed Georgian townhouse: http://www.thestonehouse.co.uk/Apartment/index.htm (scroll down to the bottom of the page).
Oh a whim while Whitby-flat-hunting I asked whether it was available and how much it was, and apparently it is. A cool grand for five nights, sleeps 7. If I had the money and could guarantee finding another six people to share with, I totally would.
(It's also for sale at the moment, at a price that will make Londoners cry.)

11:25p Mischief PR and more top secret data.
http://www.badscience.net/2008/07/mischief-pr-and-more-top-secret-data/ Ben Goldacre The Guardian Saturday July 5 2008 Anyone would think the cold war was still on, with all this top secret scientific data that journalists constantly seem to be writing about. In last week’s column, as you will remember, we saw the Sunday Express front page claiming that a scientist and government adviser called Dr Coghill had [...]

11:33p Child of the 80s?
I was in Primark* today when the following announcement came over the tannoy.
"This is a staff announcement. Could Five-Star please come to the tills. Five-Star to the tills, please."
Wow. Just wow. Bet I know what her mum's favourite band was in the mid-80s.
(True story: I used to have a co-worker who had an encyclopedic knowledge of the career of Five Star. Not only could he name all the members of the group, he could recite their singles and top chart positions, in chronological order.)
*I know, I know, it's evil. I didn't buy anything, if that makes you feel better - queues were too huge.

What I wish I was wearing to the Casanova Masked Ball tomorrow. I'm not a ball gown kinda gal. I've seen these harem trousers in high street shops and I thought how is anyone really supposed to wear these without looking like they are either wearing a diaper or going to Burning Man? Or both? And then I thought they would be great if you treated them like an Isabelle Eberhardt or glam Anne Bonny affair.

10:10p The Definitive List
A topic I have often discussed with Esdi, and quite possibly others, is which men in the media "you just would". The ones who, no matter how old and ropey they may become, you wouldn't say no to purely on the basis of their former achievements. After thinking about it this morning, on a particularly long and boring tram ride, which I struggled to stay awake through, I think I need to actually compile a list. Any suggestions would be appreciated, but here's who I have so far:
Harrison Ford Sean Connery John Cleese Michael Palin Eddie Izzard (who would also be the perfect Doctor Who)
Also a sub-section for the deceased, I'm not into necrophelia, but if they were still alive:
Cary Grant (having a mental block)
I know I've forgotten lots so please help me.

3:13p That boy needs therapy!
On Fridays this year, we ask...
( What's in the Box? )
Today in The Box we have:
Avalanches - Since I Left You
Take thousands of samples, bake at Gas 5 for a few hours, and you'll have made an Avalanches album. They did, around a decade ago, and it's still happily spinning round in my car stereo.
Actually, the main problem with this album is that many of tracks feature the characteristic "eeeeeuuuuuw" noise of someone fiddling with playback speed. Every time I hear it I think my tape deck's finally given up, before I remember that it's meant to sound like that.
If you've never heard the Avalanches before, think layer upon layer of samples, lots of violins, and almost always a neighing horse.
I think the best known Avalanches tracks are Since I Left You and Frontier Psychiatrist[*] - the former is also one of my favourites.
Avalanches - Since I Left You
(Owing to a combination of segue, inattention and lack of editing software you actually get about 10 seconds of the next track in that as well. Sorry.)
Poll #1217660
Open to: All, results viewable to: AllVerdict?
[*] The only other track to feature the word "psychosomatic".
